So you’ve done the footwork and passed out flyers at every race and motorcycle event you could find. You’ve got event invites up on Facebook, Twitter and all the local internet forums. The date of your ride is set and you expect a huge turn out of motorcyclists. Maybe you’re organizing a big ride to raise money for a cause. Maybe you’re doing a toy drive, or a memorial ride. Maybe you’re just organizing a big ride for fun. Whatever your reason for gathering a large number of motorcyclists together in one place, at one time, you need to make sure you’re prepared for anything. Preparation is the key to avoiding unwanted riding behavior and accidents due to negligence or disarray.
There are several websites where you can find additional information about safe group riding practices. I plan to touch on a few of those practices here. Consider this a light reference if you’re looking for some last minute advice on how to make your ride a successful and safe one. I’ll mention some things to look out for, as well as some examples of riding behavior that you’ll want to avoid. At the end of the day, it’s about making sure that all the riders who attended your ride get home in one piece.
Planning your route ahead of time is essential to preventing chaos during a large group ride. Plan your start and end points, as well as the places you plan to stop for fuel, food or rest breaks. Publish this route on your website, flyer or forum so other riders who plan on attending can study the route or print it out in advance. You can also use Google Maps to do this.
Planning your route in advance will help ease some of the anxiety riders feel when they fall behind or get lost or separated due to traffic, signals, etc. If the route is already pre-plotted, they can check the route themselves to get back on track instead of attempting to run red lights or speed to catch up to the group. Having a list with cell phone numbers or the addresses of intended stops can help as well.
It also might be a good idea to print out a hard copy of the route and make copies, if you have the resources available to do so. Try to keep it on a smaller template so riders could put the map in their tank bags or tape it to their gas tanks. Also consider distributing a printed list of the destination addresses as well as the cell phone numbers of riders who are familiar with the route so the group members will have reference if they get separated from the group.
Meet time:
Scheduling a group ride later in the morning gives everyone who is planning to attend the event time to eat breakfast. It also allows them to have a good night’s sleep and as well as additional travel time if they live farther away from the meet spot.
Starting the ride later in the day, like 9:00 am or 10:00 am, also prevents riders from doing unpredictable things when they’re tired and/or hungry.
Before the Ride – Pre-Ride Brief:
The “pre-ride brief,” as Jeff Hawkins from Skillz Days calls it, can also be called a “rider’s meeting.” Just like at a track day, the pre-ride brief is where you gather all the motorcyclists together at the meet location and apprise them of any information they need to know, such as the route you’ll be taking, what is considered acceptable riding behavior, what speeds you plan to travel at, who your escort riders are, hand signals or the Chatterbox frequency you’ll be using, and any possible obstacles or road work areas you may run into. This is also a good time to mention the purpose of the ride and what you expect from the riders, if anything.
Know Who Your Escort Riders Are and USE THEM!:
During the pre-ride brief, you’ll let your group know who your escort riders are. There should be at least one escort rider for every eight riders, as well as a lead rider and a chase rider or “sweep” for the entire group. If you plan to split the group up into smaller, sub-groups, make sure there is a lead and sweep rider for each sub-group. You can split the large group up by placing an escort rider at the exit of the meet location, which can wave motorcyclists forward when it’s safe to make sure they’re spread out as needed. Additionally, I suggest putting the faster riders at the back of the group to allow the slower riders to set a safe and comfortable pace behind the leader.
The escort riders can help to herd riders into one lane to keep the group together on multi-lane highways. They can park at the corners of intersections to guide riders as they travel the route. Escorts can also pull over to take photos of the group ride in a safe manner. If you plan to have an escort rider act as photographer, you should notify the riders during the pre-ride brief accordingly. I have seen riders endanger other members of the group when they suddenly dash ahead of everyone only to slam on their brakes to pull over and take a picture.
Furthermore, choosing escort riders who know the route can also prevent “road block syndrome,” where a rider pulls into an intersection to act like a barrier between oncoming traffic and the group so everyone can pull forward without having to stop at a stop sign or traffic signal. This is extremely dangerous, not just for the rider blocking traffic, but the entire group. You never know if there will be drivers who don’t realize what is going on and end up plowing into the rider blocking traffic. Having escort riders pulled over at intersections can give the rest of group reassurance that they’re on the right path and going the right way without anyone having to act as human shields.
Also, make sure to issue reflective safety vests or high visibility clothing to the escort riders so they’re easily identified by others in the group.
MSF Riding in Groups – Hand Signals and Tips:
Here is the MSF’s, or Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s, rules of engagement when it comes to riding in groups. These two templates provide suggestions for hand signals to use, as well as other general tips that can help ease the stress of organizing a large group ride.
Chase Vehicle:
Having a chase vehicle is a very convenient way to make sure all safety preparations are considered without too much action on the part of the riders. Snacks and drinks can be stored in a cooler while ramps and tools can be kept in the vehicle, should anyone need road side assistance.
Furthermore, additional luggage or supplies can be kept in the chase vehicle so the riders don’t have to carry it. Finding someone to drive the chase vehicle, however, might take a little incentive and creativity. So if you’re organizing a big ride, be prepared to buy lunch for your chase vehicle drivers, which would be a much-deserved reward.
This might not be the best idea if you’re organizing a leisurely ride for the heck of it, but if you’re planning a big event with a purpose such as to raise money for cancer or honor the memory of a fallen rider, don’t be afraid to use local enforcement. Letting them know about your event could create a safer environment for the group as you might be able to obtain a police escort. Also, they may be able to shut off certain streets from thru traffic so that the group can maneuver through dense metropolitan areas safely and without incident.

Ten confessions about lane splitting:
1) The clear definition of what “lane splitting” is continues to be open for debate. Whether you call it lane sharing, white lining or riding between cars, you’re still sharing undesignated space with other motorists. Determining what is or isn’t legal, at least in the state of California, is solely up to the highway patrol officer’s discretion. Call it what you want. Nothing changes how dangerous it really is.
2) Lane splitting or lane sharing is like riding between two moving walls that could cave in on you at any time, without warning. Because people hardly ever use their turn signals, you just have to guess which drivers look like they’re going to cut you off by watching their tires or lane position. Unfortunately, when it comes to anticipating other cagers surprising and unpredictable moves, there is no exact science.
3) Every time you lane split, you’re gambling. Probability works against you like sand drizzling through an hour glass. You just have to hope that today is not your day to go down.
4) If something does happen while you’re splitting lanes and you hit someone who steers their vehicle in front of you, it will always be your fault, regardless of whether or not you were splitting lanes safely. When you lane split, it is your responsibility to stay out of the way of other drivers. If you get hit, you’d better be prepared to pay for it.
5) Sometimes when I lane split, I start to feel dizzy and light headed. I realize it’s because I’ve been forgetting to breathe. Fighting the urge to tense up and forcing myself to stay calm and keep my elbows unlocked takes about as much discipline as not flinching when a wasp lands on your arm.
6) I always get a sinking nauseous feeling before I’m about to ride between cars. It’s the same sensation you get when you’re on a roller coaster just before you’re about to go down the first drop. You hear the chink-chink-chink of the chain pulling the car forward, but there is no turning back. Every time I’m riding into the wave of brake lights, my stomach does summersaults.
7) I’ve become so used to people not seeing me and coming into my lane without looking into their mirrors that it doesn’t bother me anymore. I don’t get angry, I don’t yell, I just keep going. As long as they don’t hit me, I could care less. But it does bother me when they do see me and they keep coming, giving me just enough room to get by without hitting me, as if getting one car ahead is more important than my life. That makes me angry.
8) I’ve tried to split lanes behind highway patrol officers because it honestly makes me feel safer. When a cop goes by, people start paying attention. Unfortunately, cops don’t like being followed and they’ve yelled at me for doing so. But when I mentioned that I was following them because it made me feel safer, they’ve let me go. :)
9) The problem with lane splitting is that you become numb to traffic. Being in a constant close proximity to other vehicles makes you a little more oblivious to them. Instead of seeing human beings behind the wheel of a car, you see rolling obstacles with gaps in between. This makes you a little too ballsy when it comes to getting through those gaps as quickly as possible. It’s too easy to switch gears into ‘I just want to get home’ mode. That’s why it’s a good idea to drive to work at least once or twice a week to keep your self grounded.
10) People ask me all the time if splitting lanes scares me. The answer is yes, it does. I dread the three hours each day that I have to do it, especially Fridays before holiday weekends. On those days, I want to kiss the ground when I make it home in one piece. But the problem isn’t the lack of control over other drivers; it’s the lack of control over me. The toughest part about being a motorcyclist is practicing self-restraint, especially when in survival-mode. Fear becomes a blessing at that point, because it’s the only thing keeping you away from the reaper.

S.Q.U.I.D. - noun/acronym - Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Ignorant and Dangerous. Derogatory term for motorcyclists who frequently ride without proper safety gear, are not knowledgeable about the sport of motorcycling or their machines and whose riding is not commensurate with their actual skill level.
Reference: The quick burst of speed and then abrupt slowing down of movement in the way that a squid (marine life) swims and its resemblance to the way that a reckless motorcyclist speeds up then abruptly decelerates when riding in traffic behind motorists.
Origins: US Navy.
Between living and riding in Pennsylvania, being an active member of a motorcycle club/community and frequenting Myrtle Beach, SC for Bike Week I have seen my fair share of motorcyclists enjoying this sport I love without proper or (in my opinion) adequate safety gear. I have long since been curious as to why one would embark on such a potentially dangerous activity without taking proper precautions to protect themselves. Safety gear goes well beyond the bare minimum of a helmet (preferably DOT and SNELL approved full face) but if nothing else it should go without saying that protecting your head is a given. I have been curious for quite some time now as to why someone would choose to ride without a helmet let alone all the other safety gear available to us for the safe enjoyment of this otherwise dangerous sport. No one has been able to ever answer this query for me. Even a few of my fellow club members (yes, sadly there are a few S.Q.U.I.D.S. in my club) who ride “naked” can't explain the appeal. Does...rather will anyone who rides without a helmet (or other safety gear for that matter) please explain to me the benefits, advantages and /or appeal in your mind associated with not protecting yourself. This isn't rhetorical, I honestly want to know. Your responses may help to change my outlook towards riders that don't wear safety gear. In case you all haven't realized, you should be offended when people call you S.Q.U.I.D.s.
Disclaimer: The meaning of the term S.Q.U.I.D. has been contested by many and may deviate from the above based on location and frame of reference.

*music fades and softly plays instrumental in the background*
*announcer voice with echo effect*
Will JAPAN get to Dee-Licious before Firecracker walks through the door?
Will Dee-Licious tell JAPAN that she is pregnant? And if so, will she tell him it is his?
Will Firecracker keep watching bikes long enough to realize that "On Top" is the the group of bikes arriving?
Will "On Top" get a chance to tell Firecracker how she feels?
Will JAPAN and FIRECRACKER be able to handle all of this drama and still come out as a couple or choose to go their separate ways?
*looking at YOU*

I was so excited to finally get my Shift Envy jacket. Ever since I saw Jessica Maine wearing the Envy in a magazine ad, I knew I had to have one! I had been eyeing the Envy on Shift’s website for quite some time and finally decided which abstract color I could to commit to. Finally, one rainy day, I decided to stop by Cycle Gear and order one.
I’ve been wearing the Shift Envy jacket for almost six months now. I’ve commuted to work in cold and hot weather, ridden cross country, and attended some weekend rides wearing the Envy. This stylish jacket really stands out with its independent colors. It makes me feel more visible in traffic and I love how the designs are so energetic and unique! I think the Envy’s strung-out-on-E patterns are such a breath of fresh air compared to the pastel pink and baby blue colors suffocating most women’s gear in the market. Yuck!
Another thing I really like about this jacket is that it has supreme ventilation and it’s easy to wash. The liner is sufficient to stave off chill on a breezy day, and the jacket is roomy enough to slip on a sweater underneath if needs be. With vents in the upper back and upper chest areas allowing for plenty of breathability, along with the visible colors and comfortable fit, you really can’t go wrong with the Envy.
However (and there is always a however) there were three things about this jacket that somewhat disappointed me. First, there is a small pocket on the front of the jacket, near the waist area, that fastens with a snap button. Because this snap is exposed, when I lean forward over the fuel tank of my motorcycle, the button scratches the paint. The more I move around, the more of a mess the button leaves. I’ve relented to covering the button with electrical tape, but that just leaves tape smudges on the gas tank instead of scratches. To try and solve this problem, I plan on having an upholsterer sew a black cover o
ver the snap to prevent it from damaging my fuel tank further.
Secondly, the jacket rises up in the back while riding, which exposes the small of my back. This is an unfortunate theme that seems to plague the majority of women’s jackets. For some reason, the gear manufacturers seem to like the idea of exposing our backsides, maybe to show off those awesome tribal tattoos or new satin thongs from Victoria’s Secret. But living with a permanent tan just above your belt line can become a real ann oyance when you start to think about skin cancer. Carrying a backpack over the jacket helps to keep the jacket in place, but it would be nice to have a little more coverage over the lower back, or perhaps an additional flap, like many men’s jackets have.
My final gripe about the jacket is the fact that it’s not water proof. I wore the jacket when I rode
across the country and after a few light rain storms; I was soaked to the bone. The jacket’s lightweight textile surface dried out quickly, but I suffered until the sun came out. I’ve come to realize I can only wear the Envy during pleasant summer weather, which I refuse to accept! I’m so addicted to the style and uniqueness of the jacket; I want to be able to wear it year-round.
These small grievances don’t stop me from donning this jacket almost daily. If Shift could find a way to make the Envy a no-nonsense, every-day jacket, but still keep the fashionable allure, I think the Envy could dominate the market as the most desirable women’s textile jacket out there.

Hey check it, I met up with some (other) Army guys (I think they were Army) just over the Florida state line and we ditched the helmets, so apparently some of you (military) guys and gals take issue? We did not get busted and we rode safe, besides we were in Florida. So, whats the big deal?
From a press release issued by Ducati Motor Holding:
DUCATI WILL FOCUS ITS TECHNICAL RESOURCES ON PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE 2011 WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A FACTORY TEAM
Ducati, having participated with a factory team in every edition of the World Superbike Championship since it began in 1988, winning 16 Manufacturers’ world titles and 13 Riders’ world titles along the way, has decided to limit its participation to the supply of machines and support to private teams.
“This decision is part of a specific strategy made by Ducati, the aim being to further increase technological content in production models that will arrive on the arket in the coming years. In order to achieve this objective, the company’s technical resources, until now engaged with the management of the factory Superbike team, will instead be dedicated to the development of the new generation of hypersport bikes, in both their homologated and Superbike race versions,” declared Gabriele Del Torchio, President and CEO of Ducati. “I would like to thank Nori and Michel, and all of the riders that have contributed to the great history of Ducati in Superbike, but above all the Ducati employees; it is their hard work and professionalism that has allowed us to achieve such important results. A big thank you also to all of the partners that have supported us, first and foremost Xerox of course. I would also like to acknowledge the Flammini brothers who have managed the championship for so long, and the FIM, the organization with which we have continuous, constructive relations.”
By making this important decision Ducati aims to increase the speed and efficiency with which it transfers advanced technological solutions, currently tested in the prototype championship, to the production series.
The task of testing innovative technical solutions in Superbike racing will therefore be entrusted to external teams in the coming years, teams that will have the chance to receive technical support from Ducati personnel. This choice will allow the teams to benefit from even more competitive machines and parts.
Despite the decision to interrupt its official participation in the World Superbike Championship, Ducati will continue to work, in collaboration with the championship organizers, other manufacturers and the FIM, to define a technical regulation aimed at containing costs.
Strong in the sporting spirit that has always allowed this manufacturer to compete, line-up against its rivals, and win, it is fundamental for Ducati to identify, together with the other interested parties, solutions that can guarantee the future of the championship in the medium-long term.
Recently the Superbike World Championship, according to the current regulations, has been interpreted as moving more towards competition between prototypes rather than for bikes derived from production machines. This has led to an increase in costs, both for the manufacturers and the teams participating in the championship. This picture does not correlate with the current worldwide economic situation, which has made the securing of sponsorship even more difficult. Ducati trusts that the work carried out by all parties will lead to improvement also in this area.
